So far as I know, Xcode 4.4 doesn't officially support using the OSX 10.6 base SDK. Maybe that's your problem?

If you open a project with such a 10.6 base SDK setting, your destination will be forced to 64-bit, and when trying to build you'll get an error about an invalid/unsupported scheme. At least, that was my experience. Honestly it's a little confusing and I think the error message could be clearer (even though it does mention the possibility of an SDK issue).
