Code editing - pane splitters

Just to make sure I am not missing the obvious, I often need to split up the current code editing window into two or more panes. Sometimes vertically, sometimes horizontally.
In any other modern code editing tool that I have used, there are buttons or draggable sliders in the GUI that allow a user to do this that are obvious, intuitive and very easy to use.
Am I correct in assuming that there is no simple, easy, straightforward method to simply drag out a pane to split the window on which ever axis I choose?
Is there only some convoluted method that requires the user to go to a menu, select the style of split that they want from four options, then click the Assistant Editor button, then navigate the assistant editor back to the file that I actually wanted? Just to display a pane splitter that should be one click or drag?
Please tell me this is not the best method we have to display a pane splitter. I really, really want to be wrong here.
