It sounds like you want a constraint that limits the size of your text
field. With your text field selected, you can add such a constraint in
the menubar: Editor > Pin > Width/Height. (You can also edit this
constraint to make it an upper or lower bound in the Attributes
inspector, by specifying the Relation as 'less than' or 'greater
than'.)
