Autolayout: Edit > Pin > : Submenu items disabled. Arghhh.

Well, a few minutes after I sent the message, I got the menu items to enable.  The answer seems to be:

• If the menu items are disabled, play around with setting constraints on some of the target item's siblings first.

If anyone has a more systematic procedure, I'd like to read it.
