I've been in the case where I tried that, then the next week, I had to open an app in Xcode 3.x and I couldn't build.
Spent an hour to install xCode 3.x again, rather than screw around with the system.
The machine you are building on must be stable. And my inexperience with running 2 versions of Xcode at once on the same box and my lack of free time to screw with the system meant "start from square one, you idiot and just install one version on the same box until you know what the limits to the system are."
When I had to crank out 2 Xcode 4 builds for 2 apps, and 1 Xcode 3 build from another, it was far faster to simply have another Mac since I did not have the luxury of spare time to figure it out.
