I do all my configuration using xcconfig files, but I do use the pbxproj settings as sort of a scratch pad when I'm playing with compiler settings. After I get it working the way I like, I move all the settings from the pbxproj to the xcconfig files and then delete all the pbxproj settings. If I totally foul things up, I just delete the pbxproj settings and start over. Sort of a cheap "revert" functionality.
