For the record, a reply off-list had me set "Open in Low Resolution" in the Finder's Info window for Xcode. This works around the problem.
But it's a pity, and surprising. I hope the Next Version fixes it.
(Given that .x releases of Xcode attend major releases of Apple OSes, there is precedent for supposing that Xcode 4.4 will be released this month.)
