Simple, clean, fully backed up.

That'll work, but it doesn't seem as simple as:
 1) Copy the checkout from the old to the new machine
 2) There is no step 2
especially considering that the bandwidth between two computers in the same room is orders of magnitude higher than to some remote server like Github. (Git repositories for large busy projects can get seriously huge.)

And actually, if you're letting Migration Assistant copy stuff from the old to the new computer, there isn't even a step 1 :)
