One more thing: the user's system log reported these errors just as the installation failed:

06/12/12 7:43:54.281 AM com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/installd' [6839] for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app' [6765]
