Interesting anecdote, and well put. There are companies that have similarly open processes now, JetBrains and Atlassian are the two examples I'm familiar with. It seems to work.
But Apple's process also can work well, sometimes spectacularly so (their OSs; iWork, plenty more). So why the difference with Xcode? Is it that a closed process doesn't work well for dev tools in particular? (both the companies I mentioned are in this space). Or has Apple just under-resourced Xcode, knowing that people are going to make great software for the AppStore(s) pretty much regardless?
