And (although I can't verify this because I don't have any pre-Lion setups) people say that Xcode under SnowLeopard offers a preference for autosaving, but this preference is missing under Lion.  This would imply that the functionality may have been supplanted by Lion's.

Xcode under Snow Leopard does offer a preference for autosaving.  It's the first preference in the first preference pane.  It's called Auto-Save and has values for Always, Prompt and Never.
