Just a follow up:

I tried to copy Xcode 4.4.1 on my system (on the side) and invoke
instruments directly from its bundle for the pre-iOS 6 devices. That
didn't work.

I also tried changing xcode-select's path to the 4.4.1 to see if that
would help, but that didn't work either.

I suspect that when I installed 4.5, the Device Support I was forced
to install caused this breakage. Alternatively, updating the command
line tools for 4.5 could have caused the breakage, but I think the
Mobile Device Framework or whatever that got installed when I first
launched 4.5 is the culprit.

So basically, I am completely blocked sans getting another Mac and
keeping its environment locked at 4.4.1 or less.
