Provisioning Profiles

Hellow,
This is probably an obvious question, but oh well ... I made a provisioning profile when I made an ap, but then decided to make a different app instead. Anyway, I compiled the new app into a .ipa or whatever the extion is and tried to sync it to my phone, but my phone won't install it. Is there something I have to do in order to get the apps onto my phone so I can see how they are properly before I go putting them in the app store?
Also, do I have to create a provisioning profile for every single app I create be it on the mac or the iPhone?
Thanks,
Harmony.
