Thank you, Marco. I’ve examined my ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports folder more carefully, and I agree with you. Although the .crash files usually show up coincidentally with the .crash.plist files, sometimes they don’t show up until the next day.
So if users run my trouble ferret the same day of a crash, more or less, I may only get a .crash.plist. But if they wait a day or so, then I'll certainly get both .crash and the .crash.plist files.

Yes, that mystery system tool is apparently what I was originally looking for.
