So Clark, since youve dipped a toe into the fray, is there a solution that addresses my original question* or am I just going to have to live with an explosion of profiles? The old wildcard profile I created still works perfectly fine since the apps that use it dont use IAP, iCloud, etc. A good answer would also include deleting the old wildcard profile if that would have the side effect of making the derived profiles disappear.
* Is there a way to convince Xcode and/or the developer portal that the smaller set of profiles is perfectly adequate, and that when I delete them from the portal then I really do want them to remain deleted?
No, there currently isnt a way to do that. Xcode will create one profile per App ID. I would recommend filing a bug requesting that Xcode not be so zealous in its attempt to be helpful :)
Done. Bug #16090841. :)
I was trying to get an answer from Dev Programs about why there are both Team and manually-created profiles for an app. They said you only need to create a specific profile if you want to limit individuals or devices (presumably because all devices get added to the Team profiles). So, it seems that in most cases, you no longer need to create a profile at all (also presumably, because you turn on the individual features in Xcode now?).
Indeed. The Xcode feature was designed in such a way that there really shouldn't be a need to manually manage development profiles at all.
