Hmm - just tried this on my Air which has been languishing for a week. The weblink has a button to ‘view in iBooks’, the iBooks store button says ‘Read’ (not ‘Free’ or ‘Update’), has a publication date of 2 jun 2014 and clicking that takes me to iBooks where the old version persists. Check For Updates gives me no update.
FWIW, I got the update on an iPad, not a Mac.
Looking at the Swift book on the store now, I see on the iPad that it says “Downloaded” (no tappable button), while on the Mac it has a “Read” button. Free books that I haven’t downloaded have “Free” buttons on both platforms.
Perhaps you weren’t logged in when you tried? Are you sure it hadn’t already updated?
Incidentally, I wasn’t exactly praising the process that I went through (in case it seemed like that). I found the “Update” button accidentally after looking in a few places that seemed a bit more obvious to me.
Also incidentally (please excuse the rambling), having watched the excellent “Designing Intuitive User Experiences” 2014 WWDC video last night, I’m amused to note that iBooks (both platforms) has "hamburger menus". You need to watch the video if you don’t already know what that means, as I did not.
