Programmatically marking events in iOS for Instruments?

It seems that DTPerformanceSession.framework can be linked into an Xcode project, but won't compile (in Xcode 6/iOS 8), because it wants libproc.h, which is not available on the device (it does appear to be available in the Simulator).

Is there any other way to mark events in iOS code to help when using Instruments?
