FWIW, turning on “Show Invisibles” causes Xcode to lockup and then run my entire system out of memory. I get the “Your system has run out of application memory” and wants me to force quit apps.

I suspected this might a keyboard hardware issue, but I get the same behavior using two keyboards from different manufacturers. Which is either a very odd coincidence, or it’s not related to the keyboard.

You could start by turning on Editor -> Show Invisibles, which might give you a clue to what the extra characters are. Other than that, it sort of sounds like a hardware problem with your keyboard.
