Hey Jens,
Those are some great suggestions. I’ll try to do some more cleaning and see if I can get Xcode to behave again.
Thanks.

Given the general whackiness of this problem, and the fact that I appear to be an isolated incident, I decided to go the route of reinstalling a new Xcode, and if that doesn’t help, a new system. Something fun to do over the holidays.
In principle reinstalling Xcode shouldn’t make any difference because the entire app package is read-only. Deleting all of the cache/pref/app-support files created by Xcode might help, though, though it can be tricky to find all of them.
Given that this involves weird characters, I’m wondering if the crash might involve fonts — perhaps CoreText is going nuts trying to find or use a font that can handle whatever glyphs are in the text, due to some sort of corruption. You could try moving aside any 3rd party fonts in ~/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts. Also the Font Book app has a “Font First Aid” command that’s supposed to root out bad font files.
Also try creating a new user account, logging in with that, and seeing how Xcode behaves. If it works fine there, you know the problem is something in your ~/Library.
