If you install from developer.apple.com, rather than going through the app store, you can end up with Xcode.app being owned by you. As it happens, all the system headers inside the SDK inside Xcode are read-write, and it's possible to have a system header open, accidentally hit a key, and corrupt your header without realizing it. The results are much as Carl Hoefs describes them.
