This seems to be the case for any image asset (be it a launch image or not). I've found it quite helpful when testing and updating assets; it saves me having to manually delete old versions as I swap them out.

When I'm concerned about preserving filenames, I prepare my images in a staging folder outside the project before dragging them into xcasset bundles.
You are using version control, right?
