Can't build after setting binding; crashes system by consuming all memory

WTF. All I did was change a binding setting in a storyboard. Now Xcode gets stuck in the "compiling storyboard files" or "compiling asset catalogs" phase (I'm guessing multithreading is the reason for the difference), consumes all available memory, and brings my system to a halt for 10 minutes, after which I have to reboot.

This is a view-based table. I set the binding on the second-to-deepest Table View Cell item. This SO question from OVER TWO YEARS AGO seems relevant:
