I followed the storm that started with Aaron Hillegass' denunciation of
the NSController layer and then it seems that he became at best neutral
on this new development (or resurrection of an old development,
depending on if you have a NeXT background.) I studied the Apple Dev
documentation and could see where this could be helpful, but I felt
there was a lot left unexplained.
Now that we've been free to discuss Panther and Xcode for a little over
a month, I've haven't been able to find any new sample code using the
controller layer (except for the examples in the documentation of the
subject), that is, none of the Cocoa Sample Code has been revisited to
apply this new technique. I try using it, but I usually like to look
at LOTS of sample code and hear about it from several sources (like
Aaron) before I get very comfortable with a new way of coding.
Is this perhaps a technology that is developing and is really for
future use? I realize that creating apps that require Panther or later
may be a little too leading edge for those who are trying to sell their
wares. For someone who may be a rung or two above the newbie, yet
nowhere near the high aether of the Cocoa-NeXTStep gods, should we
stick to the old-fashioned, time-tested, thoroughly-documented "glue"
code (pun happened accidentally) of hand-crafted controller objects?
I'd like to hear from people who've "bought in" to the NSController
layer and have war stories to relate (successes or failures) and some
of you who have looked and decided not to leap.
Thank you.
David Trevas
