Have a look at one of my open source tools, USB-TCP Bridge which is a fairly good example at getting connections to USB devices from a userland application.

Download the source code from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/osx-palm-tools

In particular, look at the USBConnection.mm file.

There are also some good examples in Apple's sample code.
