Actually, Apple has instructions on their site on how to use the powebook with the lid closed connected to an external monitor. The note doesn't impose any limitations on computer usage so this means the powerbook can run with the lid closed just fine. I wouldn't stick it in an unventilated location like a computer bag though.

I have done this (back in the PB 520 days) with an external mouse/ keyboard/monitor just to experiment, and it worked fine. The trick was to wake it from sleep, just as you were closing the lid. Then it wouldn't register the lid closing, and you could continue to use the computer with the lid closed. Can be useful under some circumstances.


I second the heat management issues though - likely more of a problem today.
