It has some sample code and it is pretty easy to use, but I

Actually, Apple has instructions on their site on how to use the
powebook with the lid closed connected to an external monitor.
The note doesn't impose any limitations on computer usage so this
means the powerbook can run with the lid closed just fine. I
wouldn't stick it in an unventilated location like a computer bag
though.

I have done this (back in the PB 520 days) with an external mouse/
keyboard/monitor just to experiment, and it worked fine. The trick
was to wake it from sleep, just as you were closing the lid.
No tricks needed with PowerBooks since TiBook if not earlier. Just
plug in an external mouse, keyboard and monitor and hit a key on t he
keyboard to wake the system.
