Actually, all ibooks and many powerbooks cannot run with the lid closed or they will overheat (for example: http://docs.info.apple.com/ article.html?artnum=88199)

And the link is broken on apple's page, but you can download it off macupdate at: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9263

It appears that a lot of it is broken in tiger. I am not quite sure why, but in panther the included program could prevent the computer from sleeping and it could wake it regardless if the lid was closed on my ibook.

It has some sample code and it is pretty easy to use, but I wouldn't recommend it since a powerbook / ibook user cannot run their computer with the lid closed.

Actually, Apple has instructions on their site on how to use the powebook with the lid closed connected to an external monitor. The note doesn't impose any limitations on computer usage so this means the powerbook can run with the lid closed just fine. I wouldn't stick it in an unventilated location like a computer bag though.
