Well, I'll sidestep the discourse and direct to the topic.

The iTunes/Mail style 'invisible' split view can be easily accomplished using Rainer Brockerhoff's RBSplitView. If you wish to implement your own, I'd use this as a guide.

This is a a FAQ, which is why I'd recommend a search of the archives for full details on how to achieve the look of these apps.

I feel like I'm missing something incredibly obvious, but I have tried googling and playing around with Interface Builder and haven't found anything. How do I create draggable divider lines and boxes like in Mail and iTunes?

Select two views and Layout -> Make subviews of -> Split View. The vertical splits in iTunes and Mail are custom, though.

Yes, I know how to make a split view. I was wondering how I would go about implementing a custom one, that is used in most applications now.

You say that like it should be simple. It's not too complicated, but you have to know stuff.

You are a Cocoa newbie? If so, I'd recommend Aaron Hillegass' "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X (2nd Edition)". It covers the basics (and some advanced stuff too) of Cocoa programming very nicely. It's $33 at Amazon right now, less than 1/10 the cost of an Alesis Micron. Unless your time is worthless, you'll expend way more than $33 worth of time trying to learn Cocoa by scouring the internet for tutorials and whatnot.

That said, these links might be handy:

I own his book. I've read it, it's a good book, but it's a bit outdated now, considering it's for Panther, not Tiger. Still, it contains TONS of valuable information, though I do not recall this topic being covered in it. I like your price units, by the way. (Did you consider eBay value? Microns have major price swings)

You say that as if I said something stupid, or wrong. Did I?

Thanks,
Logan Williams
