The benefit of using a RIP for photographic imaging alone (loose
images, not full page presentation prints and not full page proof
prints) are like so,
a. control of ink limiting for rendering of detail,
b. control of black replacement for smooth screening in midtones and
highlights,
c. control of color.
An ICC printer profile does two things: It manages the mechanics of
separation with GCR / UCR to get you the largest possible gamut with
the cleanest possible rendering (overinking causes proximity problems
which in their severest form amount to flooding), and it manages
gamut mapping (: color compression) as well. A good print profiler
has controls for both these aspects: Gamut mapping and color
correction controls along with ink limiting and black replacement
controls. For best results always use high resolution profiles, never
use low resolution profiles (low bit depth, low grid point count).
