O.K. Has anyone run any Dmax tests for blacks of the UltraChrome inks on
matte and art papers? I measure a D1.84 for the black value of the 1270,
1280, 7000 dye ink set on Epson Heavyweight Matte (and a D2.21 for the
glossy, but who cares), but I have never seen any figures published for
the UC pigment inks. Anyone?
We are using MIS7600 pigment inks in an Epson 10000CF . On
Hahnemuhle German Etching the Dmax is 1.65 (Status T,
SpectroCam) with the Eboni matt black while I can get 1.68 with
Generations Enhanced with an Epson 9000 on the same paper. The
last ink has a hybrid black, pigment + 25% dye. The Ultrachrome
matt black Dmax is close to those numbers, the Epson Archival
black way below. All with Epson drivers and RGB profiling. There
is more Dmax possible with RIPs and/or other papers. The new
Innova papers show less bleeding with the same Epson driver
settings and can have a higher inkload so 1.7+ Dmax is possible.
Dye blacks will be above all but are not fade resistant on the
Hahnemuhle paper coating. Wilhelm tests showed that and we had
that experience before and after his tests, with 3 dye ink sets.
Ernst.
PS. On the Digital B&W list Dmax readings for MIS Eboni, Epson UC
MK and PK (gloss) blacks have been published, Paul Roark +
Carl Schofield mainly. Desktop printers do not deliver as much as
the bigger droplet, wide formats. If you want to know about Dmax,
black inks and papers you will find it in the archives at Yahoo:

With the 2200, the Dmax for H Photo Rag was 1.63 - 1.64, using QTR
beta8 and Epson UC inks (matte black). EEM gives Dmax 1.68 -
1.70.
These Dmax readings are from the 100% black patch in the 21 step
gray
wedges used for linearization with the Eye-One spectrophotometer.
In the course of making some curves for the 3000 and the UT-FSN
(which MIS
will not get to until January) I've found a couple of interesting
things.
------------
First, the relative dmax of ink/paper combinations is affected
by the dot
size. For example, the relatively large 3000 dots give a much
better dmax
on PhotoRag with Eboni than does the 1280. With the 3000 &
Eboni, I get a
consistent 1.7 - which is outstanding.
Second, Epson may have changed the formula for EEM again. I
was getting a
consistent 1.68 with the batches purchased 6 months ago. The
latest EEM now
is giving me only 1.63. Of course, this is better than most of
the new
cotton papers, which can be in the 1.58 range. (And the old
Piezo driver
lowers them even more. I do not recommend the Piezo driver; the
new curves
and the Epson driver give a better overall image.)
Third, the good news is that Premier Premium Matte
(http://www.photowarehouse.biz/premier.html) gives an outstanding
1.69 dmax,
is acid-free and about as cheap as EEM. It prints a bit cold
(0.02 cold for
the UT-FSN). (There will be a warm version of this inkset also,
so people
cam mix to whatever warmth they want prior to loading the carts.)
Premier
Imaging reps say that there could be minor changes in the Premium
Matte
coating. I sure hope they don't wreck what is now a wild bargain
for the
3000.
-------------
premium luster,
1160 Epson UC PK dmax = 1.97
For comparison, MIS UT PK = 1.90
Epson Glossy Photo Paper:
Epson UC PK = 1.40 (!?)
MIS UT PK = 1.81
Ilford Smooth Glossy
UC PK = 2.07
MIS UT PK = 2.07
