Perhaps I should have clipped a larger portion of your post for clarity. My
apologies. I assumed you were using best-hence the wording of my post. Just
wanted to let people know what can happen if they try using the epson driver
with a gloss stock/matte K combo.

When I compare the profile that I've created with the Matte Black ink
set with the profile I got from the Photo black in ColorThink, the
Maximum black is L=8 with Matte black and L=22 with Photo Black. As I
don't have any problems with the Matte black prints, if I handle the
prints with normal care, I can't find any reason to use the Photo Black
ink set.
