I'm coming to this party a bit late, but couldn't you to split the drop shadow out onto its own layer once it's all manipulated and then make that layer a standalone document. Then you could place both the image and its drop shadow in ID as two separate elements and stack them atop one another.

Of course editing the drop shadow again means creating another file, but by the time you're placing in InDesign it's probably more or less finished...?

Just a thought.
