shouldn't I get the same color if I open a document (same system, same
monitor) containing an embedded ICC profile in Preview, Safari, mail or
iphoto as I do when I open the same document containing the embedded
profile in Photoshop?
Yes. Or at least pretty darn close. I still see a very slight difference when things are working properly. If you are experiencing what I had going in the past you can expect better than that. I have not seen, but would like to see a good explanation from Apple why they are not
exactly the same however.
If I open a photo with embedded sRGB profile in
Preview/Safari/iphoto/mail it is consistently more saturated and darker
than the same photo opened in photoshop (using sRGB working space).
Same result if photo is embedded with Adobe RGB or any other profile.
I understand that Mac will assume the monitor profile for nontagged
photos, but I can't figure out what is happening with tagged images.
I have seen this on my system and have encountered others who experienced the same. Apple support had me do an Archive and Install and that fixed the problem but it was a total pain. Some others were able to correct it by deleting a corrupted, hidden Color Sync preferences file via the terminal. Instructions are here: http://www.jcsewell.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/c1/colorsync.htm
Do so at your own risk. I hope it works for you.
