When printing through PS CS (Print with Preview), using the Epson
driver, rumor has it that the media type determines the amount of
ink laid down.
That's almost certainly true. Different media types need different
amounts of ink to completely fill the page.
I tried printing (untagged) targets with 4 media
types and could not see or measure any significant density or
colorimetric difference. Is there an error in the design of my
test?
It might be that the media types you chose all require about the same
amount of ink. My experience with Gutenprint (the new name for
Gimp-Print) is that most high quality media need a similar amount of
ink; it's usually things like plain paper that need less.
