I think it is comparing the measurements against an empirical model of a
printing press and makes changes accordingly. There is user control to set
the degree to which the data should resemble an ideal press behavior,
eliminating more or less local discontinuities. If you're interested I can
send you a screen grab showing you the difference with and without this
correction to the data -- very convincing to me.
