ColorSync profiles when printing from iPhoto

I a real newbie when it comes to color management so I hope it is o'k
to post my questions in this forum. I have been trying to get a good
color match between my the monitor on my new 20" iMac g5 and my Epson
R800 printer. I have calibrated the monitor using a GretagMacbeth
Eye-One2 Display and have a good profile which I applied. The match is
close, but my prints still look slightly washed out and certainly do
not match the vibrant color of the monitor.
I am using iPhoto at the moment until the Photoshop CS I ordered
arrives next week. After I have made my choices in the Advanced
Settings of the Printer Dialogue drop down window, it appears that
ColorSync is applying the wrong profile. For example, when I am
printing on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, I choose it in Print
Settings and choose Best Photo. Then I choose ColorSync in Color
Management. When I look at the Summary Window before I print, it show
PGPP, Best Photo and ColorSync under Print Settings. But, at the
bottom of the Summary Window under ColorSync, it shows: Color
conversion: standard; Profile: SPR800 standard. Since I have
selected PGPP, shouldn't the profile here be SPR800 PHOTO PAPER (G)?
If I am understanding this correctly, since I have selected PGPP in the
Print Settings then ColorSync should automatically use that profile.
When I use the Lab Plot 3D visualization tool and compare the profiles
of the standard paper with the photo paper, the gamut of the photo
paper is much larger. So if ColorSync is using the standard paper
profile here, could this be the reason for the print matching problem?
I have tried to find a way to apply the SPR800 Photo Paper (G) profile
using ColorSync but only seem to be able to highlight it and can't
apply it in the ColorSync Utility. I'm not sure what to do..?
I hope I've made some sense here. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
Bob
