Martin,
I think you are focusing on the CMYK profile generation capabilities of
Proof v ColorElite. It's interesting that, in this regard, ColorElite
actually has a larger number of patches avialable. With RGB profiles, I
believe they are the same, at 729 patches.
But this really is the point. One programme has some advantages (ink
limiting, default rendering itnernt etc), whereas the other has different
advantages. And all this from the same company, targeting a similar
"mid-range" price point!
I can't see how these two products can continue to co-exist in the same
product line, so I assume Proof will either have to change (i.e. gain the
extra bits ColorElite offers) to justify it's slightly higher price (it's
above the top ColorElite system in the pecking order on xrite's website), or
it will be dropped.
Now, as I have just been told by Andrew Rodney that ColorElite will not
accept data from devices other than the Pulse spectrophotometer, so it seems
to be a "closed" system. It is therefore not an option to offer people like
me with other Spectrophotometers a copy of ColorElite were Proof to be
disbanded. Maybe we'd be offered a "special deal" on a version of Profiler,
or a cheap "side-grade" to the top ColorElite system.
Of course, I could have it all wrong, and Proof may continue - I hope so,
with added support for the Optix. But nothing yet from Xrite in response to
my email. I've been happy with Proof - it builds generally good profiles.
However I use it less these days (except for monitor profiling) as I print
with ImagePrint and like its "canned" profiles.
