We very rarely run a single instance.

Is there any advantage in running more than one instance on the same server?

I run 13 instances on one server (one has a different app name and different options, restricted to 'administrative' users only). The other twelve reduce the impact on users when one instance is doing something intensive, and/or locking huge swathes of the database.

Graham.
