have to type characters twice: ^~`

Has anyone else noticed that they have to type the caret (^), tilde (~)
and backquote (`) twice before they appear in an xterm running under X11??

This didn't happen under beta 1 and doesn't happen under XDarwin.
It is a really gotcha if you have one of these characters in your
password!

It is as though they want to behave as escape characters (and ~ is the ssh
escape character, but this is happening in a local xterm)...

I'm running bash as my shell BTW if it makes any difference, and I also
see it when I'm running pico or vi in an xterm under X11, so it doesn't
seem to be just shell command line input.
