OK, I've completely nuked and reinstalled the machine. I submitted
bugreports to bugreport.apple.com based on my experiences with the
vanilla X11 on the vanilla OS X leopard install. ie: *nothing* else was
installed. Also, that "Check-in failed: Permission denied" error appears
right from the get-go on a completely vanilla Leopard install.
(Bug reports 5624951 and 5624939)
Then I installed the latest Xquartz binary from xquartz.macosforge.org.
I'm getting further than I did before anyway. Xquartz on its own seems
to work almost the same - keyboard input goes straight through to stdout
or stderr, but I can see redraw is quicker, and now the select language
and select session windows from the Options menu work, and it continues
to reconnect.
using /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 still fails. It starts up, I
see the login screen, so that's much better than before the reinstall; I
can also give it input focus and this time the mouse pointer doesn't go
yellow and I don't get "invalid depth" errors (as reported to
bugreport.apple.com). In fact I get the correct Ubuntu mouse pointers. I
can interact fully with the mouse with the select language/session
dialogues. Keyboard entry seems OK, but when I press return to log in...
it exits, without error, just as it did before. All I get is:
rachel-greenhams-imac:~ rachel$ /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
-query 192.168.1.3
X11.app starting:
Xquartz server based on X.org Release 1.3, built on 20071201
Check-in failed: Permission denied
meta mod is 4
Quitting XQuartz...
(Xnest and Xephyr from another Ubuntu machine - a virtual one at that -
continue to work fine, so I haven't broken the XDMCP at the server end.
Only wrinkle is that Ubuntu's Xephyr seems to leave a dead mouse pointer
on the screen as well as the live working one.)
Also, btw, why shouldn't it work with the hostname instead of the IP? It
just hangs when I do that.
Anyway, am about to do the xorg-server-1.3.0-apple2 build, to give
Xephyr another go.
