I don't know if this issue is window-manager related, as there is
none running.
The X-server as such seems to support window borders. :-)
Sometimes while switching from Aqua (?) screen to X screen, not only
top-level windows appear white-bordered, all the siblings do too.

Oh, at first sight this seems in fact not obvious. Out of
curiosity, can the X-rootwindow contents be accessed for "read back"
by Xlib? Only the root-window background pixmap?
