I'm not quite sure if this is what you're seeing, but for some reason
the tab key can get bound to "Indent Friendly Insert Tab" which is IMO
entirely wrong -- if this is set, then even if you have "Editor uses
tabs" set, the editor will often use spaces instead of tabs when you
type the tab key.
There is also a "friendly delete" binding that is equally bad. Undoing
both should yield the expected behavior.
