That sounds like my experience. My first exposure to source control was with Clearcase, run by people who really knew Clearcase. Of course, their yearly source control budget was at least a few million dollars. I find CVS-NT to be a quite acceptable alternative. I know it isn't as fashionable as Subversion, but I like it. I couldn't imagine trying to develop without adequate source control.
