Well, that's not my perception. ;-)
If so, I apologize.
CodeWarrior's and XCode are two different products by two different
teams. I find things that I preferred about each environment. For
example, I find the XCode build system to be much, much more
flexible than that of CodeWarrior. We used to set up a build
process around CodeWarrior that used AppleScript and our own
CodeWarrior plug-ins to get all the parts of our application
built. The same tasks can be accomplished through XCode with
pretty straightforward shell script build phases.
Yes, but after seven years you'd think the Xcode folks would have
implemented more of the things CodeWarrior does better. The Find
results issue is a basic issue that affects productivity for just
about everyone, significantly so for at least some of us. Copying the
features your competition does better is standard operating procedure
in the software business.
You have legitimate complaints about XCode, but I've found the
folks on the XCode development team to be remarkably responsive. I
would encourage you to send your XCode feedback to xcode-
email@hidden. And be sure to file enhancement bug
reports at bugreport.apple.com. Perhaps with some patience, you
might see some of your dearest wishes incorporated into the
application in the future.
We've already waited seven years, and since Xcode 3 doesn't implement
multiple find results windows it's safe to assume it will be at least
a year or more before we see that even in a best-case scenario. I
think that goes beyond "some patience." It's more like the patience
of Job.
As I understand it, there are a lot of people on the Xcode team, on
the order of 75-80, split into four or five groups. I freely admit I
don't know everything involved in a project like Xcode, but it
definitely doesn't seem like progress is being made at a breakneck pace.
I think a big part of the problem with Xcode is its history. Back
when Project Builder -- Xcode's predecessor -- debuted in 1987 it was
probably state-of-the-art cool and wonderful. Unfortunately, I
suspect that once NeXTStep went from being a consumer OS to an
enterprise solution, tools like Project Builder and Interface Builder
were allow to languish and become badly outdated. As a result, by the
time Apple got them and started updating them for Mac OS X they had a
*lot* of work to do, and they're still hard at work at it.
