Resizing does not work with many applications

Hi there,
I just wrote a small application help me use the keyboard to move and resize open windows (from any application). The app registers some hot keys and then uses the accessibility API to move the focused window in response to certain key presses. This works fine except that there are several important applications such as the MS Word, Excel and Aquamacs which seem to react poorly to resize, either through the Accessibility API or through Apple Script. Basically, with these apps, the Window is resized but the scroll bars/other widgets are not repositioned and so the window becomes unusable until there is a manual resize.
I was wondering if:
1) Anyone can explain this behavior (you can easily reproduce it by using Apple Script to resize an Excel Window, for example)
2) If there any workarounds? Is it possible to use some other means besides the Accessability API to programatically cause a window owned by another application to resize?
Thanks in advance,
-pp
