Icons should display properly after the startup without a second one being necessary. I've never noticed any problem after using Tech Tool for this, although I've not used it for a rebuild in a couple of years (for the following reason).

The one down side to this is that if you have any comments in the Info window for any file or folder, they get obliterated when you trash the desktop files. Comments are not preserved as they are when you do it the Apple "prescribed" way. And you lose them with Tech Tool or using a script to trash the Desktop files.
