You "could" run a script in the "Shutdown Items" folder which
deletes the appropriate desktop files (they're invisible) and then,
when you start the computer, it should force a rebuild without
further user interaction. This method would probably require
another restart after the rebuild in order for all icons to display
properly.
Icons should display properly after the startup without a second
one being necessary. I've never noticed any problem after using Tech
Tool for this, although I've not used it for a rebuild in a couple
of years (for the following reason).
I use TechTool Pro 2 regularly and find that some icons don't show up
immediately after a rebuild. A restart brings everything back to
normal. <shrug>
The one down side to this is that if you have any comments in the
Info window for any file or folder, they get obliterated when you
trash the desktop files. Comments are not preserved as they are when
you do it the Apple "prescribed" way. And you lose them with Tech
Tool or using a script to trash the Desktop files.
Agreed. You will lose the comments when you delete the desktop files
with a script, or any other type of brute force maneuver. TechTool
Pro 2 has the ability to restore the comments. :-)
I would never "recommend" the scripted method to anyone but advanced
users who know the ramifications, so here is my revised disclaimer:
Disclaimer: DON'T DO IT!
