I discovered it was because I had an earlier beta knocking around which
was a carbon style 'package'. This was making all sorts of weird things
happen, like even when running a script from the application's own
script menu, it was targeting the wrong app. Bizarre.

At one point, I got a message that application "LiveStagePRO" was not an
application. That tipped me off.

I am a bit nervous about the fact that 'packages' have scuppered my
scripts several times now, and in completely inscrutable ways. I hope
these things get straightened out.

Maybe I should just upgrade to 9.1, but it's often a bad idea to upgrade
when you are in the middle of something...
