Note that, while this approach will probably work most of the time, it relies
on the settings in the File Exchange control panel, which the user may have
altered. That may or may not be a problem, depending on the circumstances.

(Besides, for the exchange of files with other platforms, it is good that the
OS can deal with filename extensions. But for purely Mac OS files, we
shouldn't have to use this silly mechanism.)
