I think your theory is correct (particularly given the speed of the script
on an 8100/80 running Mac OS 9.1, which is the speed sample I have: the
fact that it is slowish there is not particularly important).

But now instead of presenting the mpw-dev list with a solution to their
problem (worse than ours), I'll have to present a model for a solution to
their problem. Since they're more likely to run an MPW script anyhow,
that's probably not much of an issue.
